Dear Source:
I was very disappointed to hear about the shooting and stabbings at the “carnival” on St. Thomas. Thank god I did not spend the money to travel all the way to the U.S.V.I. for this event. I was seriously considering the trip this year, as I have not had the pleasure to enjoy the J’ouvert celebration. After hearing of this incident, I seriously doubt I will invest my limited travel budget to join in any island celebrations. I feel much safer staying in Chicago, although to be honest, we had to cancel a St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year due to too much public drunkenness. Why is it that a few frustrated, violent, usually drunk, individuals are allowed to ruin the fun for so many others? I am not a prude and I enjoy a good celebration. But when we have to start canceling major celebrations, something is seriously wrong. I think our society has become too tolerant of this extreme type of behavior and we really should begin to do something serious about it before we all have to enjoy our holidays hiding in our locked houses.
