PSC Meeting on St. John Postponed

May 4, 2009 — The Public Services Commission postponed a meeting scheduled for Tuesday at the Legislature building on St. John because it doesn't have a quorum, PSC spokesman Lorna Nichols said in a news release issued Monday.
The meeting was called on a request to reconsider the ferry rate increase approved by the PSC in April.
St. John's Unity Day Group had requested the meeting.
"We find the rates discriminatory and unfair," said Unity Day Group President Lorelei Monsanto.
The rates are set to increase from $5 to $7 each way between Red Hook, St. Thomas and Cruz Bay, St. John, but decrease from $10 to $8 on the run from Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, to Cruz Bay.
Two companies, Transportation Services and Varlack Ventures, share the government-approved franchise on both routes.
Since the rate increases were announced, the Unity Day Group, along with many members of the community, spoke out at several public meetings called for other reasons about the adverse impact the increase would have on St. John residents. Those residents must go to St. Thomas for various services, shopping and other matters because they're not available on St. John. Additionally, many St. John residents commute to St. Thomas for work.
According to the news release, a new date will be set for the meeting.
