Hummers and Stealers Slug Their Way into Bob Owens Slow-Pitch Finals

April 28, 2009 — The finals of the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League is set as the National Guard Hummers and the Seaborne Stealers both won on Monday to set up Thursday night's rumble.
The Hummers withstood a late rally by Claudio Enterprises in game one to earn their spot in the finals by a score 22-20, while the Stealers took the much tougher route of having to win two elimination games to earn their spot. They defeated Speak the Word Enterprises 19-18 in the second game of the night, then beat Claudio 22-19 in a loser's bracket contest.
Hummers 22, Claudio 20
It took extra innings to for the Hummers to put away Claudio 22-20 in game one Monday. The Hummers were enjoying a big early lead only to watch Claudio storm back to tie the game and force extra innings. In the extra innings, the Hummers found themselves down four runs quickly. However, never saying die they were able to come back and win in the bottom of the ninth on pitcher Jerry Vialet's game-winning walk-off double. It was the Hummers with 22 runs on 18 hits with three errors, while Claudio finished with 20 runs on 15 hits and four errors. Vilet got the win on the hill for the Hummers, while Carmona got the loss for Claudio. Top batters for the Hummers were Mario Christian, 4 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs; and Wayne Ross, 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. For Claudio, Juan Roman Santana went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs and Juan Moreno went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Stealers 19, Speak the Word 18
Stealers center fielder Tony McGregor delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to send home Speak the Word for the season, 19-18, and in the process ensure his team a chance at making the finals by playing a second game on Monday. It was the Stealers with 19 runs on 26 hits and three errors, while Speak the Word finished with 18 runs on 18 hits while committing five errors. The winning pitcher was Sam Ramos, while Ian Lewis got the loss. Top hitters for the Stealers were Owen Pimentel, 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Eric Flynn, 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. For Speak the Word, Kareem Dennis went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs and Sylvester McIntosh went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Stealers 22, Claudio 19
The Stealers blasted their way into the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League's finals against the National Guard Hummers on Thursday by outslugging Claudio Enterprises 22-19 in the Stealers second elimination game of the night. The regular-season champion Stealers pounded out 22 runs on 18 hits with three errors, while Claudio finished with 19 runs on 16 hits and two errors. Stealers ace Sam Ramos pitched his second win on the night, while Carmona suffered his second loss of the night. Top batters for the Stealers in the night cap were Pimentel, 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Wayne Biggs, 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. For Claudio, Juan Moreno and Juan Santana both went 2 for 4 with a home run and three and two RBIs, respectively.
