Training Scheduled for Those With Disabilities: Taking Action

April 28, 2009 – Programs offering training in self-advocacy for individuals with disabilities are scheduled for May 12 on St. Thomas and May 14 on St. Croix. Participants will get an overview of the "do's and don'ts" of self-advocacy, as well as a review of the "Five Steps of Self Advocacy." Sample Advocacy letters will be provided and self-advocacy in relation to the legislative process will be reviewed. Helpful tips for communicating with legislators will also be offered. Individuals with disabilities, advocates and any interested parties are encouraged to attend this training. The programs are free and limited to 50 participants each.
* St. Thomas: 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, May 12, at The Administration
and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus
* St. Croix: 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, May 14; at The Great Hall
on UVI's St. Croix campus
The training programs are sponsored by Cornell University's DBTAC – Northeast ADA Center in partnership with United Spinal Association and the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).
