Davis Cup Tennis Competition Continues in El Salvador

April 24, 2009 – The U.S. Virgin Islands continues its participation in the Zone IV Davis Cup Competition being held this week in El Salvador. The Davis Cup is the world's largest national-team tennis competition. The V.I. Davis Cup team is comprised of Kristepher Elien, Eugene Highfield, Brian Oldfield and Kemit Lewis, with Kenny Callender as the coach.
Coach Callender reported that the V.I. lost a heartbreaker to Aruba 2-1. Eugene Highfield played No. 2 and lost 6-3,6-4 to Mitchell De Jong. Kris Elien played No. 1 and beat Gian Hodgsen 6-2,1-6,7-6 (4). Highfield and Elien then teamed up in the deciding doubles but lost to Gian Hodgsen and Harry Van Reek 6-1, 6-7 (7), 4-6. Kris Elien has won both of his single matches.
The V.I. has played Panama and Aruba and still has to play Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago. The top two teams will advance to the Group III Competition next year.
