3 Sail Church Plans Haiti Fundraiser

April 14, 2009 — St. John's nondenominational 3 Sail Church plans to raise money for the Good Samaritan of Haiti Foundation with a treasure hunt May 2.
It starts at 10 a.m. at High Tide Restaurant in Cruz Bay.
"It's the most fun you'll ever have helping anyone," organizer Laurie Van Kuren said.
She hopes the treasure hunt will provide a distraction to the continuing dismal economic news because it's different than the usual fundraising raffle. The participants have to find all the clues to get the treasure chest, said another organizer, Loyd Tyler.
One clue leads to another, with participants tracking down 17 clues. Tyler promised that the clues won't be easy. He said it will work similar to the television program "The Amazing Race."
Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 on the day of the treasure hunt. They're available at Connections in Coral Bay, Today's Flowers in Cruz Bay and the Mail Center at the Marketplace. Prizes include cash, jewelry, a gas grill, artwork and more.
According to Tyler, individuals and teams can participate, but in the case of teams, each member must buy a ticket.
The event concludes with entertainment by musician and entertainer Michael "Beans" Gardner at High Tide Restaurant in Cruz Bay.
The 3 Sail Church meets at 10 a.m. every Sunday at the St. John School of the Arts.
The non-profit Good Samaritan of Haiti raises money to help improve the education, health and welfare of the children of Ile LaVache, Haiti. Its connection to 3 Sail Church came about through Gardner, who is a member of the church and a founder of Good Samaritan of Haiti.
