Brief: Convenience Center, Recycling Bins Going Up at Peter's Rest

March 31, 2009 — The V.I. Waste Management Authority is building a convenience center at St. Croix's trash-collection site at Peter's Rest to house collection bins and compactors for household waste and recyclables.
Part of the work will include improved roadway and parking surfaces, proper drainage and wash-water treatment systems, fence and gates, security lighting, aesthetic treatments and an office building for the full-time on-site operator. WMA plans to establish hours of operations, and the operator will operate all equipment and maintain the site's cleanliness. The convenience center will serve as a model for other solid-waste bin sites throughout the territory, according to a statement from WMA.
Zenon Construction was awarded the contract and has completed the design phase. First Zenon will remove topsoil, compact the sub-grade, then put on and compact new topsoil. Work began Monday at the site, but for now residents can still take their trash there. For safety's sake, WMA ask everyone using the dump site to follow the directions of the flagmen and be cautious driving around the workers.
