Police Capture Suspect in Robberies

March 23, 2009 — Hector Luis Mercado, wanted in a string of armed robberies, was arrested Saturday around 2:30 p.m. following a foot chase by police through the bushes on the east end of St. Croix.
Mercado, 28, also known as Jesus Rivera Carmona, was also in violation of his parole, according to police.
After the foot chase, he was arrested and placed in the custody of the Bureau of Corrections. Last week police asked the public to be on the lookout for Mercado, who was considered armed and dangerous. (See "Police Still Looking for Mercado.") During that time, residents called in with several sightings of Mercado. However, on Saturday it was an off-duty police officer who spotted Mercado near the Divi Carina Hotel and Resort and led the chase to his capture.
"This is another example of residents participating in the safety of community," Commissioner James H. McCall said Monday. He also commended the officers for recognizing this suspect and capturing him without harm to themselves, bystanders or the suspect.
