March 17, 2009 — Police stationed themselves at Joseph Gomez Elementary School early Tuesday morning after receiving several tips that there were "groups of guys with guns" at the nearby Tutu Hi-Rise housing community.
"There is a shortcut from the housing community through the school campus that is commonly used," Deputy Police chief Dwayne DeGraff said in a statement Tuesday. "This was a preventative measure."
Police cordoned off the area in an attempt to keep unauthorized individuals from coming on to the St. Thomas campus. After searching the area, they found several marijuana trees but no guns, according to a police news release.
While no arrests were made, DeGraff said the department would continue to respond to all tips provided by residents, and will use them as a tool in gathering evidence against criminal suspects.
