March 17, 2009 — Local firefighters arrived at the Havensight dock Tuesday afternoon in enough time to help root out the cause of a small grease fire reported aboard Holland America's Maasdam.
"When we were called, we were told the ship's crew was trying to fight the fire, but it was indicated that they didn't know what the origin of the fire was," Fire Chief Glen Francis said Tuesday. "It was extinguished by the time we arrived, so everything was under control, but we did help locate the source of the fire, which appears to have been started after some oil was transferred from one pot to another in the kitchen of the crew galley."
Fire fighters from the Hotel and Lima companies, along with Dorothea station, responded to the scene.
The ship was not evacuated, according to WICO dockmaster Mark Sabino, who said the fire was called in around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. No one aboard was injured, he said.
"We did keep those passengers that were already ashore from reboarding the ship for about 40 minutes, but that was all," he said.
