Governor and Ms. DeJongh Launch Women's History Month Radio Series

March 4, 2009 – On Monday, in recognition of Women's History Month, Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. and first lady Cecile de Jongh launched a month-long radio series in honor of the many outstanding contributions of Virgin Islands women. The series will continue throughout March in salute of noteworthy women whose achievements have helped shape and improve the quality of life for the people of the territory.
"In recognition of Women's History Month, for the month of March, we salute Virgin Islands women who have taken strides in making the territory a better place for all. Throughout the month you will be hearing about different women–from all different backgrounds–who have positively impacted the territory and who make us proud. I am pleased to kick off this month-long salute as we highlight our distinguished matriarchs and community leaders," Ms. deJongh said.
Throughout time, women have made valuable contributions in classrooms, boardrooms, courtrooms, political arenas, the military, and in homes and communities. It is important to continue to highlight the proud achievements of women who have in previous years helped open the door and empower women throughout the territory. The series also acknowledges the next generation as they make strides in improving the status of women in the territory and worldwide, including in the arenas of health, housing, justice, pay equity, family relations, legislation, employment, and political status.
Biographies of Virgin Islands women" will be broadcast throughout the month of March on radio stations WSTA (1340 AM) and WIUJ (102.9 FM) on St. Thomas; and on WSTX (970 AM) and Sunny 99.5 FM on St. Croix.
