Gonzalez Powers Boys Dem to Ron Charles 13-15 Championship

March 1, 2009 — Finals MVP Javier Gonzalez scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Boys Dem to a 38-34 victory and a two-game sweep of the Lakers in the Ronald Charles 13-15 basketball championship Saturday night at the Central High School Gym.
Both games were close, but the combination of Boys Dem's size and Gonzalez's scoring was just enough to seal the championship.
After losing the opening game of the finals Friday, the Lakers came out in Saturday's contest a lot more aggressive in attacking the baskets. They got out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening period before Boys Dem closed the quarter on a 6-2 run of their own to tie the score at 8 after one quarter.
The teams battled back and forth in the second period, but Dem boys were a little bit better defensively as they held the Lakers to 6 second-quarter points while netting 9 to lead by three at the half, 17-14.
The Lakers battled back in the third quarter to outscore Boys Dem 11-8 in the period, knotting the game at 25 at the end of the third period. They got 6 points from Razeem Huggins and 5 from Jahmoy Williams to spark the mini-comeback.
Gonzalez really took matters into his own hands in the final period, scoring 12 of his team's 13 fourth-quarter points to lead them to the championship. The Lakers battled valiantly, but they just had no answer for the MVP. They were outscored 13-9 in the period to set the final score at 38-34.
Gonzalez hauled down 11 boards. His team also got a substantial contribution from Amadeus Derweere, who netted 9 points. The Lakers got 9 and 8 points from Huggins and Williams, respectively.
More Fire Sweeps Zion for Ron Charles 10-12 Championship
In the 10-12 age group finals, More Fire got 18 points from Iverson Davis and finals MVP Tikoy Felix to sweep their division finals 2-0 over Zion. Nicholas Springer also got into double figures for More Fire with 11 points. Zion was led by Stephaun Adams, who scorched the nets for a game-high 20 points, while teammate Kareem Felix netted 10 in a losing cause.
