Feb. 26, 2009 — Work on the LBJ sewer force main, which failed Sunday afternoon, is continuing, causing detours of traffic through the Golden Rock area.
The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority is replacing a 26-foot section of the aging cast-iron pipe. The work is expected to take about ten days, according to VIWMA.
The disruption has caused the agency to divert sewage flow to keep it out of the area. (See "Sewer-Main Collapse Creates Health Hazard, Traffic Delays."
Beginning Thursday, traffic has been diverted in the area of Golden Rock Shopping Plaza and the JFK housing complex on to accomodate the work.
To allow for the use of a heavy equipment traxcavator boom to perform excavation work, traffic will be redirected on an intermittent basis. Use of the boom will impact two lanes of eastbound traffic while it is in use.
When the traxcavator is being used, the eastbound traffic traveling from the 5 Corners intersection to the Golden Rock intersection will be diverted:
— Motorists traveling toward Christiansted town will be diverted at the corner of the U.S. District Court and will be detoured through the LBJ Housing Community.
— Motorists traveling toward the Anna’s Hope and mid-island areas will be re-directed to make the right by the Casino Commission through Orange Grove.
— Westbound traffic is being redirected through Orange Grove. Traffic will be allowed to access local businesses, such as the banks and restaurants.
Motorists are reminded to reduce their vehicular speed and adhere to the directives of the flaggers.
