Feb. 18, 2009 — The University of the Virgin Islands men's and women's basketball teams will play their first home games of the season this weekend at the Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.
In the first game, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Bucs will take on Caribbean University. The team hopes that some home cooking will lead them to their first win of the season and break a "dismal" four-game losing streak, said team captain Angelina Prince.
"Our last two games were narrow losses and many of us were reduced to tears," she said. "We have decided that we want to adopt a winning attitude, and have some positive results this weekend."
Following the first game, the UVI men will also take on Caribbean, hoping to build on their recent victory against the University of Puerto Rico Humacao, ranked fourth in the Interscholastic Athletic League.
Team captain Alvaro DeLugo says the first win came as a result of "improved chemistry" amongst the players. For the first time all season, the Bucs will have their full roster available to play.
Admission is $1 for UVI students, $2 for faculty members and $3 for the general public. Children under 12-years-old can enter for free. Community members are encouraged to come out and support their home team.
