Lieutenant Governor Hosts Art Exhibit at His Office

Feb. 17, 2009 – In celebration of Black History Month, Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis will host an art exhibit throughout his office, "Cultural Groundings," displaying the work of Afreekan Southwell. Lt. Gov. Francis will also hold a reception in honor of Southwell from 6-8 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 20, at his office, located at 18 Kongens Gade, on Government Hill, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.
The public is invited to stop by the office to view the work of Southwell, who was a painter, wood sculptor and carver; it will be on exhibit until the end of February. The exhibit will also feature Albion "Chico" George.
"I thought it was important for us to recognize and celebrate the achievement of our local black artists during this month," Lt. Gov. Francis said."Mr. Southwell's works reflect the culture and tradition of the Caribbean and Africa and speaks to us as a common people. We are honored that he has agreed to allow us to display his wonderful pieces."
