Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Celebrates Black History Month

Feb. 18, 2009 – In recognition of Black History Month, the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts has been featuring an exhibit titled, "Black History in America: A Nation Reconciled." The exhibit is a part of the museum's ongoing St. Croix Heritage House's exhibit series, which includes the Alexander Hamilton Exhibit. The images commemorate 250 years of African-American race relations in America, the Caribbean and the United States Virgin Islands.
CMCArts, in collaboration with FEDA and Sunset Jazz, has scheduled a reception for 5-6:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20. It will further expand the Black History Month theme and programming with poetry readings during Sunset Jazz. In addition, on Friday the CMCArts will host a reception with Delegate Donna M. Christensen, honorary chairwoman of the exhibit program, that will honor the two V.I. Tuskegee Airman, Henry E. Rohlsen and Herbert H. Heywood, for their heroic service to the nation. The V.I. Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc will also be present. It will be an evening of reflection, Jazz, poetry and a featured film of the Tuskegee Airman.
Featured poets will be Winnie Oyoko Loving, Kevin Rames, Beavan Smith and Winston Nugent.
The exhibit captures all of the past ills of America's treatment of blacks and the struggles of African-Americans from the dark era of slavery and the civil rights movement to the progress and evolution of race relations in modern America. It includes interviews from former slaves, past prominent black leaders, local World War II veterans, and accomplished black leaders in our society today.
To RSVP or for further details, contact the museum at 772-2226. CMCArts is located on the Frederiksted waterfront, 10 Strand Street, St. Croix.
