Jan.29, 2009 – Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Robert C. Byrd Scholarship. Graduating students who have been accepted to a college or university for attendance in the fall of 2009 are eligible for the four-year scholarship, which is annually administered by the Virgin Islands Department of Education, according to a press release from St. Thomas-St. John School District Superintendent Jeanette Smith-Barry. The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship program, complies with section 419E of the Higher Education Act of 1965. As part of this program five Byrd scholars receive awards of $1,500 per year, which can be renewed for a maximum of eight consecutive university or college semesters upon submission of required evidence showing maintenance of eligibility.
To be considered for the scholarship award a student must meet the following criteria:
· Satisfactorily complete secondary school or GED requirements with a cumulative average of "C" or better
· Show evidence of enrollment at an institution of higher education
· Must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and promise of continued academic achievement.
Applications are available from guidance counselors at the various public and private high schools, the Office of the Commissioner of Education (located at 1834 Kongens Gade), the Virgin Islands Board of Education (Seventh Day Street) and the Curriculum Center in Anna's Retreat. They are also downloadable at doe.vi. Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of the Insular Superintendent no later than Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m.
