Jan. 31, 2009 — The top two teams in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball league, the Seaborne Stealers and Softball inc., were easy winners Thursday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park as they both won by way of the ten-run mercy rule. The third contest of the night was scheduled to be between Speak the Word and 40 Caliber, but 40 Caliber could not field enough players and the game was awarded to Speak the Word via forfeit.
Softball Inc. 16, Salty Sailors 3
Softball Inc., the League’s top team with an unblemished record, made short work of the Salty Sailors in game one on Thursday, knocking them off in five innings, 16-3. It was Softball Inc. with 16 runs on 19 hits and three errors, while the Salty Sailors finished with three runs on six hits and three errors. The winning pitcher was Cody St. Pierre, with Rod Graci getting the loss for Salty Sailors. Top batters for the winners were Tony Cruz, 2 for 3 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Tim Gillipsie was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. For the Salty Sailors, Jeff Elvins was 1 for 2 with a home run and one RBI and Jason Helima was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Stealers 19, Wyatt Heat 7
The Seaborne Stealers, in second place one game behind Softball Inc., kept pace by overpowering a shorthanded Wyatt Heat squad 19-7 in five innings. The Stealers finished with 19 runs on 14 hits and two errors, while the Heat plated seven runs on nine hits and committed three errors. Eric Flynn led the Stealers offensively by blasting three home runs. Flynn finished the night 4 for 4 with three home runs and four RBIs. He was ably supported by teammate Angel Torres, who was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. For defending champions Wyatt Heat, Eric Perez was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Dwayne Harvey was 2 for 3 with one RBI. Samuel Ramos got the win on the hill for the Stealers while James Smith took the loss.
