Jan. 5, 2009 — The Explorer, the first cruise ship of 2009 and the first of three this week, arrived in Frederiksted Monday morning, a welcome and unusual site in a town that has seen few cruise ships for the past several years.
Run by the Institute for Shipboard Education, the Explorer carries nearly 1,000 passengers and serves as a floating campus for the University of Virginia's Semester at Sea study-abroad program. Students attend classes on a variety of subjects during sea days, including learning about the history and culture of the ports they visit. The ship stayed for the day, departing at 8 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Disney Magic will make its inaugural call on St. Croix. This family oriented ship carries a total of 3,650 passengers and crew and is the second-largest ship scheduled to call on St. Croix this year.
Originally scheduled to arrive Friday, the World will arrive two days early, docking Wednesday at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility for a two-night stay. This specialty cruise ship boasts 165 luxury private residences where residents enjoy all of the comforts of home while circumnavigating the world. This community of upscale world travelers enjoys activities such as golf, tennis, spa treatments, fine dining and sightseeing.
