Dec. 6, 2008 — The Las Vegans used a seven-run third inning to power their way to a 15-7 game one win in their two-of-three semifinals series against eight-time defending champions, Just For Fun, in the Quarren Schjang 40 Plus softball league on Friday.
The winners got a good effort from pitcher Paul Christian, who defeated the defending champs for the second time this season at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park.
Batting first, the Las Vegans got on the board right away with two runs on RBI singles by Antonio Rivera and Collin Jarvis. Just For Fun responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Kai Schjang and an RBI single by Eustace Davis to lead 3-2 after one inning.
An RBI single by Tony Cruz and an RBI ground-out by Dennis Brow in the top of the second inning gave the lead back to the Las Vegans at 4-3. Just For Fun had no answer in the bottom of the inning.
The Las Vegans took control of the game in the top of the third, exploding for seven to take an 11-3 lead, and they did not look back. They scored on a two-run blast by Dennis Brow, a two-run double by Warren Christian, and RBI doubles by Jesus Saldana, Cruz and David Clark.
Just For Fun could only muster one run in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly by Kai Schjang to trail 11-4 at the end of three innings.
An RBI single by Real Sackey in the top of the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Steve Simmonds in the top of the fifth extended the Las Vegans lead to 13-4. The defending champs were able to get one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Reuben Molloy to trail 13-5 after five.
After a scoreless sixth, the Las Vegans scored their final two runs of the game in the top of the seven on RBI doubles by Brow and Jarvis to now lead 15-5. Just for Fun closed out the scoring for the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs on solo home runs off the bat of Molloy and Raymond Cintron to lose by a final of 15-7.
Christian went the distance on the hill to pick up the victory for the Las Vegans, who are hoping that after eight years they can get by Just For Fun. Mario Ortiz took the loss for Just For Fun. Top hitters for the Las Vegans were Brow 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, Cruz 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Warren Christian was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
