Buccaneers Face Central Bayamon, Metropolitan in Final Home Games
UVI's varsity men's volleyball team will play its final two regular season matches at home against Central Bayamon and Metropolitan on Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11, respectively. The Bucs season record is 2-6 after dropping road games last weekend to Caribbean University and Polytechnica. This weekend's games will be played at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center. Admission is free.
Reception Ceremonies Set in November for Employees Winning Incentive Awards
Winners of the 2008 Performance Incentive Awards in the Distinguished Award and Meritorious Award categories will be recognized with awards reception ceremonies on Nov. 21 on St. Croix and Nov. 24 on St. Thomas, according to UVI's Acting Human Resources Director Yvonne Lawrence. The receptions will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on both campuses. On St. Croix the reception will take place in North West Wing's Great Hall (room 134). On St. Thomas the reception is scheduled in the Administration and Conference Center's first floor conference room (142-1B). Members of the University community who want to support the winners by attending the reception are asked to RSVP to hrweb@uvi.edu or call the Human Resource Office at 693-1410 by Oct. 31.
Winners of the Performance Incentive Awards were announced earlier. They are as follows:
Distinguished Award category: Group 1: Dr. Velma Tyson – STX, Dr. Robert Stoltz – STT, Dr. Teresa Turner – STT, Moneca Pinkett-Wilkins – STT, Tannesia Petersen – STT, Dr. Sandra Romano – STT, Dr. Marc Boumedine – STT, and Amanda Wright – STT. Group 2: Dr. Paul Abney – STT, Dr. Althea Baumann – STX, and Lois Sanders – STX.
Individual winners in the Meritorious Award category are Donna Andrews – STT, and Sean Georges – STT.
V.I. Premiere of Spike Lee Film to Raise UVI Scholarship Funds
Students at the University of the Virgin Islands will be the beneficiaries of funds raised at the Virgin Islands premiere of acclaimed director Spike Lee's latest film, "Miracle at St. Anna."
The premiere is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Market Square East Cinemas. Only 150 tickets – at $25 each – are available. This will include a glass of wine and light hors d'oeuvres. A reception will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., with the movie shown from 6 to 8:45 p.m. A discussion period will follow. The event will also serve as an early Veterans Day tribute to veterans of foreign wars, with several local veterans planning to be in attendance who will share their stories during the discussion period. National Student Exchange Open House Set. Oct. 16 on St. Croix Campus
UVI's Counseling and Placement Division on the St. Croix Campus will host a National Student Exchange (NSE) Open House from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, in Evans Center room 716.
The National Student Exchange Program is open to full-time undergraduate students. It provides students an opportunity to attend another school in the NSE network at little or no more cost than UVI attendance. The NSE program has developed a membership of nearly 200 diverse colleges and universities in the United States, its territories and Canada. NSE is celebrating its 40th year of operation. Freshman, sophomore and junior students are eligible to participate. Those interested are asked to sign-up in the Counseling and Placement Office lobby – Evans Center rooms 720 and 721.
Sign Up Deadline Extended to Oct. 17 for Peer Counselor Program on St. Croix
UVI's Counseling and Career Center on the St. Croix campus is seeking students to serve as peer counselors. Peer counselors participate in an intensive weekend training session and are expected to spend five hours per month helping fellow students. Interested students can get more information or sign up for the program at the Counseling and Career Center office in the Evans Center. The deadline to sign up for the program has been extended to Friday, Oct. 17. For details, call 692-4223.
Town Meetings Set Oct. 17 to Discuss Results of Student Satisfaction Survey
UVI's Office of Institutional Research and Planning will host a Town Meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses to discuss the results of the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey conducted in the spring of 2008. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend. The strengths and challenges of UVI by campus will be presented. Some of the areas considered will be student centeredness, instructional effectiveness, academic advising, registration effectiveness, and safety and security. The meeting will be held in the Administration and Conference Center's first floor conference room on St. Thomas and teleconference to Evans Center room 401 on St. Croix. Sixth Parent Empowerment Conference Set Oct. 18 and 19 on St. Thomas, St. Croix
The sixth annual Parent Empowerment Conference will be held on Oct. 18 on St. Thomas and on Oct. 19 on St. Croix.
The conference is designed for parents of children with disabilities as well as service providers. Last year more than 200 individuals participated. It is sponsored by the Virgin Islands State Office on Special Education, the V.I. Family Information Network on Disabilities (VIFIND) and the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD).
The conference keynote speaker is LeDerick Horne, a very successful adult living with learning disabilities. Conference workshops will also feature Emily Snell and Michael Fagbeni discussing customized employment, Lisa Stephens detailing parent vs. parental involvement, and Michele LaCoss speaking on siblings of children with disabilities.
The program, which is free, will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. It will be held at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort on St. Thomas and the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort on St. Croix. Children are welcome and childcare will be available. There will be door prizes. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Individuals planning to attend should reserve space by calling 774-1662, 693-1173 or 774-4399.
Faculty, Staff Input Sought on Technology in Classrooms
UVI faculty and staff interested in classrooms fitted with technology – computer labs, smart classrooms and videoconference rooms – are invited to a meeting to discuss possible upgrades and expansion of these facilities. The discussion will cover the current state-of-the-art facilities as well as what Information Technology Services can do to improve or expand the facilities. Now is the time to request additional facilities. This session will be an open discussion moderated by Erik Pattison. It is scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, in Teacher Education room 101 on St. Thomas and Evans Center room 713 on St. Croix.
St. Croix Intramural Co-ed Volleyball
Five teams are playing in this year's intramural co-ed volleyball league on UVI's St. Croix campus. Matches are scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 9 p.m. at the UVI outdoor sports facility. Playoffs and the Championship Game will continue through the end of October.
Danger Zone Remains Unbeaten
Danger Zone, co-ed volleyball league defending champions remain undefeated with a three-set sweep of Royalz 25-13, 26-24, 25-13 in games on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Newcomers 'Vybz also remain unbeaten, besting Acez 25-14, 25-17, 25-21 also on Wednesday. The stage is now set for next week's key match-up with Danger Zone, led by Bernhardt Simmonds, taking on 'Vybz, led by Roderick Moorehead, Jr. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Damage Kontrol plays
Acez in game one and danger Zone plays 'Vybz in game two. On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Acez play Danger Zone followed by Damage Kontrol and Royalz.

Conference to Review Breast Cancer Risk for V.I. Women on Oct. 25 at UVI
The results of a study on the breast cancer risk among women in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be discussed at a conference to be presented on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands on Saturday, Oct. 25. The presentation is sponsored by the Caribbean Exploratory Research Center and UVI's Division of Nursing Education. Dr. Sandra Underwood, from the College of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will review the current trends in breast cancer detection and control among Caribbean women in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The conference will be presented from 9 a.m. to noon in Teacher Education room 101 on St. Thomas with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on St. Croix.

Red Ribbon Week Activities Announced for St. Thomas Campus
The UVI community is encouraged to join in this year's St. Thomas campus Red Ribbon Week activities scheduled Oct. 27 through 30. The local observance is part of a national drug and violence prevention awareness campaign created to honor the 1985 murder Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. Among the highlights of this year's activities are a speak out competition on Wednesday and a presentation by motivational speaker Devin "Dutchie" Robinson on Thursday. Monday, Oct. 27 – Pledge Day – Make a pledge to be drug free and collect a Red Ribbon at the UVI Dining Pavilion or Classroom Administration Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 28 – Decoration Day Contest – Offices and student organizations are encouraged to decorate an area on campus. Judging begins after 10 a.m. To sign up call Carolyn Wattley at 693-1120 or visit the Student Activities Center by Friday, Oct. 17.
Wednesday, Oct. 29 – Wear Red Day – The University community is encouraged to wear red in support of Red Ribbon Week. Judging of the most original costume will take place during the Speak Out competition.
• Walk & Speak Out – A walk against substance abuse and crime prevention begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports and Fitness Center. The first 100 participants will receive a free t-shirt, water bottle and towel. The walk ends on the Golf Course where an open-mic Speak Out contest is scheduled.
• Seak Out topics will address substance abuse, violence and HIV/AIDS using any artistic talent. Presentations are limited to five minutes. A first prize of $300 and a second prize of $150 will be awarded. To sign up for the Speak Out contest contact Carolyn Wattley at 693-1120 or visit the Student Activities Center by Friday, Oct. 17.
Thursday, Oct. 30 – Motivational Speaker – Devin "Dutchie" Robinson, a Virgin Islander, columnist and author of six books, will share his speech "Plantation to Prison." Last year's Speak Out winner Jaedee Caines will also present a poem.
