Wyatt Heat and Softball Inc. Win in Opening Round of Hovensa Playoffs

Oct. 1, 2008 — The Hovensa Coed Slow- Pitch Softball League kicked off its 2008 playoff Tuesday with three games contested at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
Defending champions Wyatt Heat swept two games — the first and third games of the night — from the Cartel to eliminate them from the playoffs in their best-of-three series. Softball Inc. edged Code9 8-6 in the second game to take a one-game lead in their best-2-of-3 playoff matchup. This series will continue Thursday with two games, if necessary.
Wyatt Heat 13, Cartel 12
In game one Tuesday night, the defending champions, Wyatt Heat, staved off an upset-minded Cartel squad to take game one of their best-2-of-3 playoff contest by a 13-12 score. It was the Heat with 13 runs on 14 hits with two errors, while the Cartel finished with 12 runs on 11 hits and committed four errors. Dexter DeSouza got the win on the hill for Wyatt Heat, while James Smith got the loss for the Cartel. Tony Perez led Wyatt Heat with a huge offensive night at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three home runs and 9 RBIs. Teammate DeSouza chipped in by going 2 for 4 with one home run and two RBIs. For the Cartel, Wayne Scotland went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and Freddie Pimentel went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Softball Inc. 8, Code9 6
Code9 gave Softball Inc. a bit of a scare in game two Tuesday night, but the favorite prevailed 8-6. Softball Inc., this year's pick to knock off perennial powerhouse Wyatt Heat for the Hovensa softball crown, finished with eight runs on 12 hits with two errors. The fourth-seeded Code9 squad finished with five run on 10 hits and committed two errors. Softball Inc. ace pitcher Cody St. Pierre took the win, while Angel Soto got the loss for Code9. Top hitters for Softball Inc. were Aaron Smith, 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Antonio Cruz, 1 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs. For Code9 Angel Guzman went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs, while Miguel Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Wyatt Heat 12, Cartel 7
Wyatt Heat secured a place in this year's Hovensa Coed Slow Pitch Softball League finals by beating the Cartel for the second time Tuesday by a 12-7 margin. Both teams had 10 hits, but it was the time when the hits were delivered that proved to be the major difference. Wyatt Heat had more timely hits and one less-costly error. It was Wyatt Heat with 12 runs on 10 hits and two errors, while the Cartel finished with seven runs on 10 hits and three errors. Dexter DeSouza won his second game of the night on the mound for Wyatt Heat, while Samuel Ramos got the loss for the Cartel. Top hitters for the Heat were Martin Charles, 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Enrique Soto, 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. For the Cartel, Darren Lewis went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and Freddie Pimentel went 1 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs.
