Brief: Shot By Police, Escaped Con Dies in Hospital

Sept. 21, 2008 — After being shot in the leg and undergoing emergency surgery on St. Croix, 19-year-old Eduardo Carmona Jr. — one of three inmates that escaped over the weekend from Golden Grove Correctional Facility — died at 8:29 a.m. Sunday at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Carmona, along with St. John resident Derrick Fredericks and 33-year-old Carlos Burgos of St. Croix escaped from Golden Grove sometime between midnight and 10 a.m. Saturday. Law enforcement officials hunting the escapees in the Mon Bijou area on St. Croix fired on Carmona, hitting him in the thigh and damaging a major artery, according to information recently provided by the Justice Department and police (See: "Police Nab One of Three Escaped Convicts.")
Meanwhile, the hunt for Burgos and Fredericks — both considered by law enforcement officials to be "extremely dangerous" — is still on, DOJ spokeswoman Sara Lezama said Sunday. Police and Justice officials will provide more details into the circumstances surrounding Carmona's death, along with ongoing efforts to capture the other two fugitives, during a joint press conference scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday on St. Thomas, she added.
