V.I. Shooting Team Performs Well at Copa Caribe

Sept. 20, 2008 – The Virgin Islands Shooting Sports Federation has successfully participated in the Copa Caribe Shooting Competition held Sept. 10-14, in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The federation welcomed new shooters from the St. Croix Marksmanship Association, Kevin Sloan and Tanja McPherson. Also participating, from St. John, were Karen Gerard and Ned Gerard, who just recently returned from the Beijing Olympic Games.
Teams from most Caribbean countries were represented at the Copa Caribe, such as: Martinique, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbados.
This was Sloan's first international competition and he scored 532/600 in Men's Air Pistol, finishing 24 out of 38.
Tanja McPherson, who started shooting only 5 months ago, also performed well in Women's Air Pistol, with a score of 331/400, finishing 9th out of 14. Together with her teammate, Karen Gerard, she earned the V.I. the silver medal for the Women's Air Pistol Team, missing the gold by only four points.
Ned Gerard shot a 585/600 in Prone Rifle, which earned him the silver medal, loosing the gold by only one point to a rifle shooter representing Martinique, who previously was France's third ranked rifle shooter.
Karen Gerard won the gold in Women's Air Pistol with a 367/400 and 95.6/100 as her score in the final. She also won a bronze medal in the Women's Defense Shoot, and in Sports Pistol, she placed fourth with a score of 541/600, after losing in a tie with Michelle Maynard from Barbados. She received the prestigious trophy for Overall Best Female Pistol Shooter.
