Meeting to Pick Ottley Replacement Rescheduled for Sunday

Sept. 19, 2008 — Democratic Party members will meet Sunday to pick a replacement for Sen. Basil Ottley Jr., who will leave the Legislature at the end of the month.
The meeting, originally scheduled for Saturday, will instead by held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Palms Court Harborview Hotel on St. Thomas.
Last week, territorial committee members from the St. Thomas-St. John district recommended that Patrick Simeon Sprauve fill the empty seat. Sprauve clinched the party's nomination with 17 votes, beating out three other candidates: the Rev. Toi A. Barbel, Horace T. Brooks and Michael Farrington.
All four names have been forwarded to the territorial committee, which may still choose not to accept Sprauve's nomination and go instead with one of the other candidates Sunday, according to Democratic Party State Chairman Cecil Benjamin. Either way, the name of the winning candidate will then be sent to the Senate president, who will "acknowledge the party's recommendation," Benjamin said at last week's meeting. The meeting was postponed to allow the committee's St. Croix members to attend a funeral, according to a Democratic Party news release.
"It is important that all territorial committee members attend and participate in this important and historic meeting," Benjamin said in the release.
