Sept. 10, 2008 – The Virgin Islands government has submitted an application to the U.S. Tennis Association for assistance in refurbishing 10 tennis courts in the two island districts, according to a press release from the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation.
The application, filed with the USTA as part of the Tennis in the Parks Program for public facility assistance grants, will support the renovation of two courts at Sion Farm, three courts at D.C. Canegata Ball Park, two courts at the Alvin McBean Complex, one court at the Sub Base tennis courts and two at Cruz Bay.
Governor John P. deJongh Jr. noted that the goal of this initiative is to renovate the playing surface of several public tennis courts to a level that will attract tennis enthusiasts and put the courts into greater use.
"We remain committed to identifying ways and means of upgrading our sports and recreational facilities throughout the territory. The filing of the grant assistance application is but the first step to rejuvenate the sport of tennis at existing recreational facilities in the Virgin Islands," the governor said.
"Through this application the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation is seeking grant funds for the renovation and upgrade of the 10 existing public tennis courts," according to DHPR Commissioner St. Claire N. Williams.
