Public Schools Join National Observance of Grandparent's Day

Sept. 7, 2008 – The St. Croix Public School District will join school districts and communities nationwide in the observance of Grandparent’s Day this coming Sunday, Sept. 7, according to District Director of School Community Relations Janet Brow. The District urges community grandparents to visit public schools on Monday, Sept. 8, and tutor, mentor, have lunch with, or just enlighten children about "the good old days" by sharing stories about their pasts with them.
Brow said, "The month of September was chosen for the annual observance to signify the autumn years of life. And in honor of grandparents everywhere, and particularly those in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the V.I. Department of Education encourages families to help bridge the communication gap between generations fostering respect, patience and understanding for our community’s elders through the observance of this very special day.
"The celebration of Grandparent’s Day honors these grand individuals, who as matriarchs and patriarchs provided for their families and many times assisted in the care of their children’s families." Brow said. "One of the greatest gifts a child can have is an opportunity to spend time experiencing the love of a grandparent. The observance pays tribute to the source of information, strength and guidance older persons can offer, thereby giving children the opportunity to learn the ancestral line of their families and the preservation of ethnic or religious beliefs.
"In our celebration of Grandparents Day, we ought to remember those persons who are unable to be with their families or who have no families. Every effort must be made to include these persons in the mainstream through cards, community projects and visitation at times other than just holidays. Let us enhance ‘intergenerational interaction’ and remember that it takes an entire village to raise a child. When information is passed down to our children, everyone can be assured of the heritage being preserved," she said.
