Class of 2012 Welcomed to UVI

Aug.12, 2008 — The Great Hall on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands was packed with almost 200 new and transfer students Monday evening, as college students of all ages learned how to get the most out of their experience at UVI.
"Please take advantage of all that we offer," said LaVerne Ragster, UVI president.
She told the students to make sure they get their money's worth, and advised them to research where to get scholarships and internships.
"This is college — you have to take responsibility for yourself," Ragster said. "We want you to leave here with much more than you came with."
The welcome marked the beginning of orientation week, during which students learn about campus services, tour the campus, meet classmates, take placement tests, plan and register for classes. Fun activities are also planned for this week, such as an island tour and a cultural party.
"This is a small university with 2,500 students, but it is big in quality," said Al Hassan Musah, UVI provost.
He advised students to take an active role in their education by participating in extracurricular activities and building relationships with staff and friends. Musah's "big in quality" remark hit the mark for one student.
"I agree — I think the university is one of the best universities in the world," said new student Kenya Emanuel. "I'm happy to have the opportunity to attend UVI."
Merritt Crowder, UVI bookstore manager, told the group about the UVI Bookstore Going Green recycling project. Students gave a round of applause and cheers filled the room as Crowder told them about the containers set up around campus to recycle aluminum cans. To promote the project, the bookstore has T-shirts for purchase made from recycled products.
"I encourage everyone to make the campus 'green' and more beautiful," Crowder said.
Giving the keynote address was Rashidi Clenance, CEO of Sunstroke Promotions. Clenance, a popular radio personality, hosts the "Big Phat Morning Show" on Isle 95 and works as public relations and fundraising officer at Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Clenance told the students to stay open minded and open their own doors — something he has done with his own diverse careers.
"You need to behave like you go to an Ivy League school," Clenance said. "This is a time to get serious and get down to business."
A new student "pinning" took place with university officials, alumni and members of the Student Leaders organization pinning a UVI pin on the new students, signifying the beginning of their college careers at UVI.
"I am stoked about new things and new experiences here at UVI," Kaheem Thomas said after getting his pin.
The class of 2012 will graduate the same year the university celebrates its 50th anniversary, Ragster said.
"Imagine the celebration for your class," she said.
