BIR Urges Taxpayers to Update Social Security Cards

Aug. 2, 2008 – Taxpayers need to update their social security cards to match the name under which their income tax return was filed. "Taxpayers whose name on their tax form does not match the social security card can expect delays in receiving their Economic Stimulus Rebates. Proof of having updated the social security card to the name used when filing the tax return is required for the Stimulus Rebate check to be processed," according to a press release from the Bureau of Internal Revenue Director Gizette L. Thomas Friday.
The Social Security Administration Office requires proof of name change in order to change a name on the social security card. Proof may include: a marriage license, divorce decree, naturalization certificate or court order. Questions regarding Social Security requirements may be addressed at the SSA offices in Nisky Center on St. Thomas, Sunny Isles on St. Croix, or at the Contact Station on St. John, on the first Wednesday of the month.
