Fall Semester Newsletter Offers Details of Online Registration, Important Dates
A newsletter for current and incoming UVI students featuring details of the upcoming fall semester has been released by UVI's Office of Access and Enrollment Services. UVI's fall 2008 semester classes will begin on August 18 and continue through December 10. The newsletter specifies regular and late registration dates, discusses the payment of tuition and fees, and advises students who receive financial aid or scholarships to visit the UVI Cashier's Office prior to Aug. 6. 'Gap' Funding Assistance Offered to Assist Students with Tuition Increase
The University of the Virgin Islands has implemented a means by which students will be able to fund the gap between the old UVI tuition and the new tuition, which was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees at its June 2008 meeting. Gap scholarship assistance is available for the Fall 2008 semester at a rate of $82.50 for residents and $247.50 for non-residents. Students requiring assistance must complete an application for Gap Scholarship Assistance. The forms are available from the UVI Financial Aid and Institutional Advancement offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The form can also be accessed for printout from the "Tuition Increase Details" button on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu. UVI to Host PRAXIS Exam on St. Thomas and St. Croix
The PRAXIS exam for teacher certification will be administered from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.
• On St. Thomas, the test will be administered in the Classroom Administration Building on the third floor. For more information, contact Desha Brathwaite at 693-1462.
• On St. Croix, the test will be administered in Nursing Buildings Q-100 and R-100. For more information, contact Charmaine Smith at 692-1470.
2008 Alumni Phone-A-Thon Set Aug. 25-28; Volunteers Sought
Members of the University community – students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends – are being sought to join in the 2008 Alumni Phone-A-Thon. Volunteers will take to the phone banks, seeking financial support from UVI's alumni, from August 25 through 28, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. The effort will continue from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. From 15 to 20 volunteers are needed each night. The 2008 Phone-A-Thon goal is $25,000. National Geographic's Wild Chronicles Program to Feature UVI Researchers
National Geographic's award-winning public television series Wild Chronicles will feature UVI researcher Dr. Donna Nemeth and others in an episode titled "Secrets of the Coral Reef" scheduled to begin airing nationally on July 30.
Dr. Nemeth and former UVI instructor Paul Sikkel, who is now at Centre College in Kentucky, conducted a study on fish parasites and fish cleaning stations. UVI graduate Amber McCammon also participated in the project. Dr. Nemeth's work received funding from VI-EPSCoR and Earthwatch.
Although the show is not currently scheduled to air on WTJX-Channel 12 in the Virgin Islands, it is expected to eventually run on the MSNBC cable channel and to become available as a Wild Chronicles podcast. Those podcasts are available from this link and from the iTunes Store.
Summer Science Symposium Set Aug. 1 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public, are invited to attend the third Summer Science Symposium, scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1. The symposium will take place in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
About 25 students from the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses will use scientific posters to present the results of research done in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and the Summer Sophomore Research Institute (SSRI) programs. These programs are supported by the National Science Foundation's HBCU-UP program, the MARC program of the National Institutes of Health, and the Jones-Holloway-Bryan Foundation. Another 12 students who participated in UVI's six-week Bridge2Calculus program will also attend.
The symposium is organized by UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientist Program and the Science and Mathematics Division. For details, contact Tannesia Petersen at 693-1232.
Free Workshop for Addiction Professionals Slated Aug. 15 on St. Thomas Campus
Universidad Central Del Caribe of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands Department of Health Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, and UVI's Counseling Services will present a workshop titled "Buprenorphine Treatment: Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. The session, which is free, will take place in Business room 110 on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Abuse of and addiction to opioids, powerful pain relievers, remains a critical national public health concern. To address this problem, a training program for multidisciplinary addiction professionals has been developed. It is designed to provide a broad overview of the medication, its effect, and the role of non-physician practitioners in providing and supporting the treatment of individuals who receive this medication.
Seating for the workshop, which includeds breakfast and lunch, is limited. Individuals interested in attending should register by sending email to joseg.soto@uccaribe.edu or carmenl.rivera@uccaribe.edu.
UVI Issues Request for Expressions of Interest in Hotel Project
In keeping with the mission of the University of the Virgin Islands and its Vision 2012 Strategic Plan, the UVI Board of Trustees has authorized President LaVerne E. Ragster to issue a Request for Expressions of Interest to develop a hotel on the western end of Brewer's Bay on St. Thomas.
This project seeks to help the University fulfill its mission of working to enhance the lives of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean. Establishing a hotel and conference center on St. Thomas would meet emerging demand.
Qualified hotel developers are asked to respond. A full copy of the Request for Expressions of Interest for this project and contact information are available from the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.

Reichhold's 30th Anniversary Season to be Unveiled at Business After Hours
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will provide a sneak preview of its 30th Anniversary Season at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, during a St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event. The preview and Business After Hours session will take place in the Reichhold Theatre.
The 30th Anniversary Season will feature big names in music and dance, and an expanded Family Series. The Business After Hours event will include performances by Spectrum Band and Caribbean Ritual Dancers. A free bu

Faculty Convocation Set for Aug. 15
UVI's 2008 Convocation for full-time, part-time and research faculty is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. Cooperative Extension Service Office on St. Thomas Temporarily Relocated
The Cooperative Extension Service (CES) offices on UVI's St. Thomas campus have been temporarily relocated to the University's former Business and Finance Office building (behind the golf course). The relocation was necessary to allow the CES's quarters in the Newhouse Building to be renovated and repaired. For more information, contact the CES office at 693-1080.
SBDC Offers July 30 Seminar on Web Marketing
A seminar titled "The Fundamentals of Web Marketing: Kick Your Site into High Gear!" will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) on Wednesday, July 30. It is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Monéca Pinkett-Wilkins of TechConnect.VI will be the presenter. Admission – $40 per person – is limited to the first 19 persons who pay by 4 p.m. on Monday, July 28. Topics to be covered include making your site stand out, turning web surfers into customers, interactive lead generation, content management, measuring traffic and search engine friendliness. Certification Course for HR Professionals Offered in September by CELL
Human resource professionals who wish to obtain nationally recognized certification can now take advantage of a preparatory course offered by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center. The course will be offered from Sept. 8 to Oct. 15 on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Sessions will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the CELL Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus and the Joseph A. Simpson Building in Frederiksted, St. Croix. The course provides a solid foundation for meeting human resource challenges found in today's demanding work environment. It prepares professionals to achieve the Professional in Human Resources (PHR®) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) designation. Certification is awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

CELL to Offer Introductory Insurance Course; Scholarships Available
An introductory course aimed at individuals interested in or currently employed in the insurance industry will be offered this fall by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. Introduction to Insurance and Captive Management is scheduled to run from Sept. 9 to Oct. 16. Sessions will be held 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus. The course will cover general insurance concepts and principles, including these topics: risk transfer, liability, claims, workman's compensation, underwriting, property and casualty insurance, and an introduction to captive insurance.
A limited number of scholarships to participants interested in enrolling in the course will be offered by UVI-CELL with sponsorship from the Hudson Management Group, Ltd. To qualify for the scholarship, participants must pre-register and take the qualifying exam for the course.

UVI to Host Annual Labor Day Volleyball Tourney Aug. 29-31
UVI's Athletic Department will host its eighth annual Labor Day Volleyball Invitational Tournament in the Sports and Fitness Center on Aug. 29, 30 and 31. Club teams from Kean University (New Jersey), Metropolitan University (Puerto Rico), the Midwest, the Eastern Caribbean, BVI, St. Croix and St. Thomas will participate. The matches will serve as a pre-season test for UVI's men's and women's Bucs squads.
The tournament begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, with three matches. Play continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The action breaks Saturday afternoon and resumes Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Play will conclude Sunday afternoon and evening, with games beginning at 3 p.m. Admission is free and the concession stand will be open for refreshments. UVI Students' Survey on Ecosystems Seeking Participation of V.I. Residents
A group of UVI students is surveying U.S. Virgin Islands residents on how they relate to coastal ecosystems. Data generated by the study will help natural resource managers design management strategies for human as well as marine and terrestrial environments. In completing the survey, which should take less than 20 minutes, participants will be aiding scientists, resource managers, UVI students and the general public.
UVI Student Volunteers Sought for St. Thomas Tree Inventory
UVI students interested in learning to use the latest geographic information system (GIS) software and global positioning system (GPS) technology are being sought as volunteers to assist with a tree inventory planned on the University's St. Thomas campus. The inventory is part of a grant project recently awarded by the V.I. Department of Agriculture.
Students accepted for the St. Thomas project will take a two-day GIS software training class and learn to use a GPS unit. They will also learn to identify trees and assess their health. A similar inventory is planned as part of the project on the St. Croix campus, where 4-H students will participate.
