St. Croix Holds Anything Goes No. 3 Bike Race

July 14, 2008 – For the third time this season, the Virgin Islands Cycling Federation held an "Anything Goes" race. These races offer only the bare minimum of guidance – a known starting line and a finish line. Almost 40 riders showed up at Fort Christian on Sunday morning, knowing only that the finish was at Fort Frederik. The race's course was up in the air, as each rider, or team of riders, could choose their own route.
Robert Bumann attacked the early small climbs, then broke away on the twisting Morningstar Hill descent, and completed the 15 miles down Queen Mary Highway in 38:07. A small group tried to put together a chase but did not have the horsepower to close the gap. Jonathon Cruz was second, over a minute back in 39:14. Sue Brown was two seconds behind in third place.
Sara Gambee led the women in 48:05. Denise Blanchette was second in 52:49 and Madeline Cruz was third in 55:22.
The next race on the schedule is set for July 27. The "El Ocho" will start at Café Kaleidoscope at 7 a.m.
