Brief: 'American Idol' Winner on Tortola for Talent Contest

June 30, 2008 — Ruben Studdard, winner of the second season of "American Idol" in 2003, will perform in the British Virgin Islands July 19, headlining a scholarship competition for young women.
Studdard, an R&B and gospel singer, will sing as part of the annual Hal Jackson's Talented Teens International Scholarship Competition, held this year on Tortola at the Long Bay Beach Resort and Villas.
The teen talent contest starts July 12 and runs through July 19.
Harold "Hal" Jackson, group chairman of Inner City Broadcasting and founder of the New York City-based Hal Jackson’s Talented Teens International Scholarship Program, started the annual scholarship competition 38 years ago to parley talent into advanced education. In that time, the program has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships and prizes to its participants.
