Dolphins Swim at Hall of Fame Pool in International Swim Meet

June 25, 2008 – Seven St. Croix Dolphin swimmers qualified for and competed at the prestigious Speedo 2008 Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics International Swim Meet at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Florida from June 19-22.
Swimmers attending the meet had to be faster than qualifying times in their events in order to compete and the Dolphins were proud to send a strong delegation.
"The meet attracted teams from 16 states and five countries and featured over 50 contestants in each race. We were challenged at this meet and did well by typically placing in the top fifteen in every event. We used this meet with two goals in mind; one, to prepare our older boy swimmers to win medals at the 2008 Caribbean Island Championships in Jamaica this July and two, to help develop the racing talents and maturity of our younger swimmers. We achieved both goals at this meet. Not every swim was a personal best but it wasn't necessarily supposed to be. We improved our race technique and race pacing at this meet and swimmers need to learn these skills in high-level competitions, not just in practice. Working on them now will help us tremendously down the road. With hard work and determination, I believe we could win this meet in the future," said Dolphin Coach Kevin Tyrrell.
Devontai Stevens, Bryson Mays, Jemille Vialet and Ryan Nelthropp raced in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley relays. They swam in a time of 1:46.21 in the freestyle relay and 2:00.03. The medley relay was a two-second drop from their previous best time. Those four swimmers and Sam Shogren, who did not attend the meet, will be swimming in Jamaica in July representing the Virgin Islands.
"I got a chance to race again after not being able to do so since the end of my college season in March," said Dolphin Ryan Nelthropp, now a scholarship athlete at Rider University in New Jersey. "We are all looking forward to Jamaica and want to do the V.I. proud. This was a great preparation meet; now we need to step it up and get the job done when it counts."
