Pact Allows Some Dominica Students to Continue at UVI

June 5, 2008 — Students graduating with associate's degrees from the State College of Dominica can now earn their bachelor's at the University of the Virgin Islands, thanks to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) established between the two schools.
"The college recently approached me, since they know I have ties to Dominica and asked me to help facilitate an agreement," Sen. Louis P. Hill explained Thursday. "I spoke to the nation's minister of education, and he in turn made the necessary agreements in Dominica with the college so we can get this thing together. We decided on same dates for this month and UVI put a delegation together so we could go down there and finalize everything."
With the MOU in place, students that transfer from the State College of Dominica can pursue humanities, social sciences, business administration and mathematics courses at UVI "without any problems," Hill added.
"This means UVI will accept all the students' credits in courses that the two colleges have already agreed upon," he said. "Students from the State College of Dominica will also be offered a reduced tuition if they are accepted to UVI."
UVI already has similar agreements in place with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the British Virgin Islands, the University of St. Martin, and Clarence Fitzroy Bryan Community College in St. Kitts.
“The University of the Virgin Islands is pleased to have another means of fulfilling its mission through working with Dominica State College,” UVI President LaVerne Ragster said in a news release Thursday. “We are looking forward to the continued enrichment of our student body with students from Dominica, as the University meets the higher education needs of both the territory and the region.”
The MOU will ensure multi-cultural diversity among UVI's student population, generate revenue and help reduce "brain drain" in the Caribbean region, Ragster added.
