May 27, 2008 – Today, In recognition of Senior Citizen Month, Senator Shawn-Michael Malone hosted over 200 seniors during his 2nd Senior Citizens Appreciation Day. The event was held at the University of the Virgin Islands Administration & Conference Center.
“It was a tremendous honor to be surrounded by such history and inspiring individuals who imparted their wisdom during my 2nd Senior Citizens Appreciation Day. This day is a way for me to pay my respect to those cultural bearers and trail blazers who have paved the way for current and future generations. They have set the standard by which we are able to live. I was overwhelmed but grateful for the turnout of seniors that proved to be fulfilling and most of all educational for all parties present. It was an experience that I will cherish for the remainder of my life,” Senator Malone conveyed.
“Everyday of every month should be a moment to pay tribute to the senior citizens within our community. So much of our lives, culture and rich history, have been preserved as a result of their actions. This was clearly evident by the rich stories and intriguing messages that they conveyed during the program. Although they provided a great deal of entertainment, they were highly entertained by cultural icons such as Bradley Christian who displayed madras figurines, demonstrated the significance of the madras headdress and was the guest emcee for the madras fashion show,” Senator Malone concluded.
