May 23, 2008 — The 22nd Annual Innovative Boy Scouts Royak Regatta kicks off on St. Thomas Sunday with youth races starting at 9:30 a.m. at Magens Bay, followed by adult races at 1:30 p.m.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., said to Nathan Clark, senior district executive of the V.I. Boy Scouts Council.
To date, 11 youth teams are on the roster, including two teams from St. Croix. The JROTC Devil Rays from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School will be strong contenders in the junior division, and will be battling the JROTC team from Charlotte Amalie High School, along with Boy Scouts Adventure Crews from All Saints Cathedral School and Lockhart Elementary.
"We also have a group of kids from Garden Street, and two groups from the Pathfinders out of Seventh Day Adventist School. JROTC and Pathfinders groups from St. Croix are also coming over," Clark said Friday.
The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Boy Scouts, and helps sponsor a variety of different training and leadership programs and camping opportunities, Clark said.
"We're starting the adult races a little later in the afternoon so can put the youth races in the morning," Clark said. "We have a few more teams coming from St. Thomas this year also, which will help us raise more money as well."
