American Legion to Host 39th District Convention

The American Legions of the Virgin Islands will host their 39th Annual American Legion District Convention at 10 a.m., on Saturday, May 17, at the American Legion Hall, Sub Base, St. Thomas. The convention will last throughout the day. Legionnaires from all posts in the V.I. will assemble to discuss issues affecting the veterans of the Virgin Islands and to prepare an agenda for the Department of Puerto Rico Convention next month in Puerto Rico.
The Legion will also render a special tribute to Armed Forces Day, the returning members of the 651st Maintenance Company of the V.I. National Guard and all deployed members of the National Guard. Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May.
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the Armed Forces being unified under one department — the Department of Defense.
