Distinguished Students Honored at UVI Academic Awards Ceremonies
The University of the Virgin Islands honored its most distinguished students at Academic Awards Ceremonies on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses in April. Award recipients received scholarships, divisional awards and other academic awards. Approximately 130 students received awards. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The release includes lists of all students honored on both campuses.

Bucs Volleyball Team Wins STT/STJ Winter Power League Championship
UVI's Buccaneers volleyball squad won the St. Thomas/St. John Winter Power League championship on May 1, defeating two-time defending champions Top Spin in a 2-0 sweep of the best of three playoffs. After losing the first set, 22-25, the Bucs rebounded in the following sets, winning convincingly, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15. Bucs' regular season coach Jason Liburd – who was in the ironic position of playing for Top Spin – lauded the team's win and the presence of many UVI students and staff who came out to show their support. "Your presence made a huge difference," Liburd said. "We look forward to your continued support in our upcoming LAI season."

Spring Commencement Set for May 12 and 13
UVI's spring semester has ended for students. Commencement exercises are slated for May 12 on the St. Thomas campus and for May 13 on the St. Croix campus.

Volunteer Ushers Needed for St. Thomas Commencement
The UVI Commencement Committee is seeking ushers to serve for the 44th Commencement on the St. Thomas campus. The Commencement ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 12. Interested persons should contact LeRue Browne at 693-1566.

UVI Sets Summer Session, Fall Semester English Placement Tests for May 7
The University of the Virgin Islands will offer English placement tests for incoming summer session and fall semester students on Wednesday, May 7, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Students must have applied to UVI to be eligible to take these tests. Students should bring a picture ID, two pencils and two pens. The tests offered are:
• English 100 – an essay test – is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both campuses.
• English 101 – a reading and vocabulary test – is set for 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on both campuses.
On St. Thomas, the tests will be given in the Sports and Fitness Center (second floor). On St. Croix, the tests will be administered in buildings Q100 and R100.

UVI Sets May 8 for Mathematics Diagnostic and Placement Testing
The University of the Virgin Islands will administer its mathematics diagnostic and placement test on Thursday, May 8, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The test will be administered at 4:30 p.m. on both campuses in the following locations:
• St. Thomas: Classroom Administration Building (CA) rooms 305 and 306
• St. Croix: Nursing Division's room R-100

April Issue of Dateline: UVI Now Available Online
The April 2008 issue of the newsletter Dateline: UVI has been distributed on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses and is available online from the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu. The newsletter features coverage of UVI Service Awards presentations, St. Thomas campus student employee of the year Julie Cruz, the upcoming Buccaneer Beach Party with Tom Joyner and a story on UVI alumni featured in a new anthology of Caribbean poems. Also featured is a photo of employee Yvonne Phillips who served as Parade Marshall for the 2008 Carnival Children's Parade.

China's Golden Dragon Acrobats Coming to Reichhold on May 10
Prepare for a spectacle of dazzling brilliance and breathtaking skill as China's Golden Dragon Acrobats take to the stage as part of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts' Family Series. The Golden Dragon Acrobats have performances set for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Reichhold Center. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.

Small Business Week 2008 Activities Set for May 19-23
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will coordinate this year's annual Small Business Week activities from May 19 through 23. The week is designed to promote entrepreneurship and small business training opportunities. The week will be highlighted by Small Business Week awards ceremonies set for Wednesday, May 21, on St. Croix and for Friday, May 23, for the St. Thomas/St. John awards. UVI to Host Tom Joyner May 22
The University of the Virgin Islands will host radio personality and philanthropist Tom Joyner as he and passengers from his annual Fantastic Voyage cruise disembark in St. Thomas on Thursday, May 22. The cruise raises money for Historically Black Colleges & Universities. The "party with a purpose" starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Reichhold Center for the Arts and Brewer's Bay Beach with Cool Sessions Brass providing the music. Food and drinks will be on sale. The local community is being invited to extend their lunch time to come out and party with UVI, Tom Joyner and the crew. UVI volunteers/ambassadors will be needed to assist with many aspects of the event. Prof. Aurelia Donald (at 693-1316) is coordinating volunteers. Young People Sought for Reichhold's 2008 Youth Moviemaking Workshop
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is accepting applications for its 2008 Youth Moviemaking Workshop. The workshop starts Monday, June 23. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 30.
