Gill netting is wildlife and coral reef hazard it is a very treacherous and gruesome way of fishing that was banned in July of 2006.
It is said to be banned but isn't enforced and because of the governments inconsideration for the importance concerning the ban of gill netting, the fishermen also show no mercy or consideration for our reefs and the wildlife that reside in it. Our coral reefs and wildlife are being depleted before they are able to renew themselves.
Gill netting shows no discrimination, so besides the fact that parrot fish, turtles and other fishes being caught snorkelers are being caught as well and fishermen are choosing fish rather than saving the lives of the snorkelers who are permitted to be in the area.
The reef has changed very drastically that regular divers are recognizing the immediate change in the reef.
The economy is being hurt tremendously. Tourists come from far just to be able to see the beautiful marine life in the V.I. which brings in the money much needed which if we don't take care of this problem it may be no more.
People are offended at the request to ban gill netting saying all we care about is the fishes and not the fishermen and their families but that is not the case it is a wrong and harmful method and abuses the fisheries.
Fishing should be done in a reasonable manner, where you are able to make an adequate amount of money and still at the same time not kill the fishes unnecessarily. Is it right that fishes should die because of our selfishness, or to have in less than year we have enough fishes we can count on our fingers. If the ban is instated it needs to be enforced to the full power. The reef is very important its part of our economy it can help our tourism and our islands beauty be enhanced. Do what's right and save our coral reefs.
