April 27, 2008 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. will visit Denmark later this year instead of next week, though Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty will still make the trip scheduled for May 6 through 10.
At the request of the Danish government, deJongh will reschedule the planned trip to a date to be announced soon. DeJongh said Sunday that "after conferring with Danish officials it was decided that a rescheduling of the upcoming visit to a date later in the year would allow more time to address the many items that are up for discussion between both the Virgin Islands and Danish governments."
DeJongh said the invitation from the Danish Foreign Ministry remains open and that the two governments are working closely on a new date. "We are excited and committed to seeing this trip happen, there are many issues and opportunities that we want to pursue both with the Danish government and within Denmarks private sector. We will take advantage of this additional time to consider all of those items," he said.
Danish Consul General Ambassador Torben Gettermann, who represented Denmark at the recent Transfer Day ceremonies in the Virgin Islands, said, "The postponement will give added time to discuss the various topics relevant to our historical relations as well as future commercial ties to which also Denmark attaches great importance.
Nicholson-Doty is scheduled to meet with several European charter and tour operators, as well as traditional commercial carriers who have connecting services to the V.I. She plans to discuss increased tourism opportunities for the territory within the European marketplace.
Nicholson-Doty is also scheduled to host a reception at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, James P. Cain. The planned reception attendees will also include Danish tour operators, airline representatives and Virgin Islanders in Denmark.
