Escaped Murderer Spotted on St. Croix, Remains at Large

March 19, 2008 — Convicted rapist and murderer Jeffrey Warner has been sighted on St. Croix, and law-enforcement officials are following all leads in hopes of returning the escapee to Golden Grove Correctional Facility, Attorney General Vincent Frazer said Wednesday.
Warner, 45, a St. Kitts native, had "built some relationships" on St. Croix while living in the territory, and officers are currently trying to make contact with those individuals, Frazer said. Meanwhile, the attorney general said he has been meeting with the families of Warner's victims.
Warner was in Golden Grove serving a life sentence on one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated rape. On Tuesday, Frazer explained that Warner was last sighted at Golden Grove between 6 and 7 p.m. Saturday, but was not present when prison guards took a head count around midnight.
It has since been discovered that Warner slipped through a chain-link fence surrounding the roof of the prison's recreation area, Frazer said Wednesday.
"Instead of a roof, the area has a chain-link fence on top, and he (Warner) was able to exit through that area," Frazer said. "There are still some questions about what happened that we haven't been able to answer as yet, but we are trying to re-secure the fence in a way that it can't be done again."
Law-enforcement officials have stressed that Warner is considered extremely dangerous and should not be approached if spotted. Residents with information on his whereabouts are urged to call the V.I. Police Department's Crime Stopper Hotline at 777-8711 or emergency 911.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that will lead to Warner's recapture. Warner is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, is of medium build and has black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a white muscle shirt and gray sweatpants.
