Brief: Good Friday Not a Good Day to Sell Alcohol

March 18, 2008 — If you operate a bar or restaurant, don't serve alcohol Friday — it's illegal.
As the police do every year, Police Commissioner James McCall is advising the public to comply with restrictions on the serving of alcoholic beverages on Good Friday.
Title 1, subsection 171(b) of the V.I. Code reads, "Distilled liquor and drinks prepared therewith shall not be served in public places of refreshments between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Good Friday. Whoever violates this subsection shall be fined not more than $200 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both."
Interestingly, the police notice of the restriction defines "distilled liquor" as "beverages that have been vaporized, cooled and collected in the droplets of liquid which are condensed from vapor, in a process that creates purification to drink."
Fermented liquors, such as fermented beer, lager beer, ale, porter, liquor, wine or any beverage containing more than one percent of alcohol by volume, will also be forbidden by police, according to the news release.
It is the responsibility of all owners of businesses that dispense alcoholic beverages and liquor to adhere to this law in respect for the religious holiday.
"While some people may not honor the law, it is up to the business owner to comply," McCall said.
