Crucian Author Debuts at Undercover Books

Dec. 5, 2007 – St. Croix author Jesse MacWilliams will sign copies of her mystery thriller, "Mastermind," from 5-8 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Undercover Books in Gallows Bay. The reception and book signing will take place during the Gallows Bay Holiday Festival, a celebration of the season with music, moko jumbies and extended hours of shopping at Gallows Bay stores.
It is an intriguing suspense novel, told from the viewpoint of female Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Morgan Delaney. The story begins with the murder of a young female district attorney in San Antonio. Dr. Delaney investigates the death and links it to several recent homicides of single professional women. Meanwhile, a romance may be developing between Dr. Delaney and lead police detective Sam Kabala. The plot thickens as links between Kabala and some of the victims come to light, and he falls under suspicion. Complicating matters further is Dr. Delaney's professional rival, the ambitious and jealous Dr. Margaret Vessy, who might be involved too. Things couldn't get more difficult for the new chief – until she becomes the serial killer's next target.
While the story is strictly fictional, author Jesse MacWilliams's expertise in forensic medicine is authentic, which comes as no surprise since the author is actually the nom de plume of St. Croix's own medical examiner, Dr. Michelle DuPre. Like Dr. Delaney, the central character of her novel, Dr. DuPre is a forensic pathologist, a medical doctor with advanced specialized training. Also like her creation, DuPre had worked as a police detective before attending medical school.
The novelist originally moved to St Croix in 1986. She has served as the medical examiner for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, based on St. Croix, since 2004. She plans at least two more mystery thrillers featuring the same lead characters.
