Christmas Boat Parade Will Light Up Christiansted Harbor Saturday

Dec. 3, 2007 — Boats decked out in holiday lights will sail the Christiansted harbor Saturday for the annual St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade.
The town will be ablaze in holiday lights, and stores and restaurants will offer holiday specials. Entertainment will include steel-band orchestras, mocko jumbie dancers and the explosive colors of the fireworks display.
Organized by the boating community of St. Croix, the event is in its 13th year. Activities on the boardwalk begin at 5:30 p.m., with the boat parade starting just after dusk about 6:15 p.m. The fireworks, sponsored by Hovensa, will follow the end of the parade when all boaters are clear of the parade route. Many stores will stay open later, and some will reopen after the parade for late holiday shopping.
The parade has become the biggest Christmas boat parade in the Caribbean, according to a news release from organizers. Earlier this year the parade was featured in a Travel Channel special about St. Croix. Boaters host the yearly event to show their appreciation to the people of St. Croix "for the enjoyment of their beautiful waters in which they fish, boat and sail," the release said.
