Kean Students to Compete in 'Poetry Out Loud Contest'

Ivanna Eudora Kean High School students will compete in the "Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest." The competition, presented in partnership with the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition. Twenty students from the high school will participate in the contest at 9 a.m., on Monday, Dec. 3, in the school cafeteria.
The winner and first runner up of this competition will advance to the territorial "Poetry Out Loud" contest to be held on March 5, 2008, at the Reichhold Center. The state champion will advance to the "Poetry Out Loud" national finals on April 28-29, in Washington, D.C., where $50,000 dollars in scholarships and school prizes will be awarded.
