CFVI Junior Angels Team with Seaview Seniors for Bingo

Nov. 18, 2007 — Junior Angels of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) played bingo with seniors at the Seaview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Facility on Friday, blending the enthusiasm and energy of young people with the wisdom and appreciation of older citizens.
All agreed that this was a wonderful way to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company.
Junior Angels are high school volunteers who demonstrate a commitment to the V.I. community by volunteering their time. Through CFVI, they are partnered with selected not-for-profits for internships of up to 10 hours per week. The students receive a small stipend to help with the cost of transportation to and from their agencies.
During his or her internship, students are given an introduction to the work force, as well as a myriad of opportunities for personal and professional growth. There are currently 16 Junior Angels at work in our community at a variety of agencies including Virgin Island Resource Center for the Disabled, Humane Society, and Pistarckle Theatre to name but a few.
“I am very proud of the enthusiasm and dedication that our Junior Angels bring to their volunteer service,” said Liz Lapon, the program’s coordinator at the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. “Junior Angels are leaders in the community, who are making a positive impact on today’s needs in the VI.”
CFVI’s Junior Angels not only fulfill their own volunteer commitments, but also often join together collectively for special volunteering projects, such as the visit to Seaview. Through CFVI’s mentorship, they also participate in programming that prepares them for college and the application process, including weekend and evening sessions offering PSAT, SAT and ACT preparation. CFVI also organizes social activities geared not only to providing fun, but in which the Junior Angels can share with each other the knowledge and experiences they have gained through their individual internships.
Established in 2004, the Junior Angels Program is an initiative of CFVI’s Community Service Fund. This fund is supported primarily by contributions from EDC members who wish to invest in the future of the US Virgin Islands by introducing our most talented youth to the worlds of volunteerism and philanthropy.
Currently there are over 90 named funds at the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands providing scholarships, grants and supporting programs throughout the USVI.
