Longtime Boutique Will Close Its Doors

Nov. 1, 2007 – Cuckoo's Nest Boutique is closing its doors after 36 years of service to the Virgin Islands. Owner Helen Kirwan says: "Thank you all for the love, support and patronage these many years. I love you St. Thomas! I wish we did not have to close but the demands of keeping the store as new, fresh, and exciting as you have come to expect of me requires lots of travel and hard work.
"Frankly, I am tired. The loss of my husband and best friend last year has begged the question: Do I want to do this alone? The answer is no. My only regret is that there is no one to continue to operate this wonderful shop. Many visitors who seek us out every time they return to the island will be sorely disappointed, as will our many customers from neighboring islands. Cuckoo's Nest has dressed you all since 1971, for your proms, graduations, weddings, funerals, and even for inaugurations. It will be sorely missed and I will miss you all."
When Cuckoo's Nest opened in the Pissarro Building all those years ago, it was just for women, but Helen changed its look and expanded its parameters whenever the spirit moved her. In the late 80s she brought in some menswear and over time it grew to what in 2006 was named Best Men's Store on St. Thomas. While still having a small selection for women, it became the mecca for the well-dressed man in town. The shop moved several times and even had a branch on St. Croix many years ago.
