Governor Calls for Legislature to Confirm Spampinato as Education Commissioner

Oct. 17, 2007 — With acting Education Commissioner Lynn Spampinato set to appear before the Senate Thursday morning for a final vote on her nomination, the governor has issued a final plea for approval.
“When I campaigned for education reform, I made a promise to the people of the Virgin Islands to bring about meaningful change in the way that we educate our children in the territory — our next generation," deJongh said, according to a Government House news release. "With my election to the position of governor, voters territory wide effectively put forward a mandate for change in our education system. It is imperative that we acknowledge that the voices of the community in favor of reform are being heard. Additionally, we must bring about change in our school system by putting forward the best-qualified person who shares my vision and who will build a team to implement that vision, in the best interest of our children."
Last week, the Senate Rules and Judiciary Committee issued an unfavorable recommendation for Spampinato after a nearly 11-hour hearing. The governor has been in continued talks with members of the 27th Legislature and stakeholders throughout the V.I. community, expressing his strong support of Spampinato, the release said.
“The status quo is simply not enough," deJongh said. "Real reform is what we need in order to successfully provide our children with the best education possible to compete in the global economy. There is an absolute need, at this critical juncture, for the Legislature to partner with my administration and with me, and turn the V.I. Education Department into a world-class institution."
Spampinato is due to appear before the Legislature at 10 a.m. Thursday for a final vote on her nomination.
