Slain Corrections Officer was Shot Outside His Home

Oct. 1. 2007 — The Bureau of Corrections officer killed late Sunday night on St. Croix was shot at the gate to his home, according to the V.I. Police Department.
At 10:10 p.m. Sunday police responded to calls of shots fired in the Smithfield area of Frederiksted. They found the victim, 37-year-old Davidson James, lying face down with multiple gunshots wounds to his body and head, according to a statement released Monday by police spokeswoman Monyka Johnigan.
James was "en route to his home and was shot while opening or closing the gate to his residence," Johnigan said. No motive has been established and police are investigating all leads, she said.
James was born on St. Croix in January 1970. He joined the Bureau of Corrections Aug. 18, 1995. He was assigned to the Golden Grove Detention Center and served the bureau with honor and dignity, according to his superiors.
"He was an excellent officer who always made sure he got his job done, and you could count on him to be there no matter what," said Gary Evans, chief of programs and acting warden of the St. Croix district.
When asked whether there was anything missing on the body or if robbery was involved, Evans replied, "Not as far as I know."
James is survived by his parents and brothers, Evans said.
"People are in shock around here," he said. "That this could happen to him is senseless and heartbreaking."
