Oct. 1, 2007 — Two Las Vegans pitchers combined on a one-hit, 13-0 shutout of the powerful Mix-Up squad Sunday in Quarren Schjang softball action.
Virgillo Diaz started for the Las Vegan and pitched three innings while allowing the lone base hit. After he got ejected from the game in the top of the fourth inning, David Clarke came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings to seal the deal on the 10-run, mercy-ruled, five-inning whitewash.
Batting first, long-ago champs Las Vegans came up with one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single off the bat of Ray Defraitas.
After a scoreless second inning, Las Vegans put the game away in the top of the third when they erupted for 11 runs to chase off Mix-Up starter Jose Guerra. Las Vegans scored 11 runs on a three-run home run by Frank Rijos, a two-run triple by Jesus Saldana, a two-run single by Steve Simmonds, an RBI single by Antonio Watts, and three runs on Mix-Up errors to take a 12-0 lead.
Las Vegans scored the final run of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple off the bat of Malcolm McGregor to set the final score at 13-0.
David Clark picked up the win in relief, while Guerra got the loss for Mix-Up. Defraitas led Las Vegans' offensive attack with a 3-for-3, two-RBI night at the plate. He was well supported by teammates Saldana, who went 2 for 3 with two RBIs; Rijos, 1 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs; and Simmonds, 1 for 2 with two RBIs. For Mix-Up, Leonard Frett went 1 for 1.
